The best time of year to surf in Ericeira
Ericeira works all year, but each season surfs differently. Here is how to choose when to come, depending on your level and what you want from the trip.
Ericeira’s long, exposed coastline picks up swell year-round, which is a big part of why it became a World Surfing Reserve. But the experience changes a lot with the season, and picking the right window matters more than picking the right spot.
Autumn, and October in particular, is widely considered the best time to surf here. The Atlantic starts to deliver consistent, clean swells, the summer crowds thin out, and the water and air are still warm. For intermediate and advanced surfers chasing quality waves, this is the sweet spot.
Summer is the gentlest season and the best time for beginners. Swells are smaller, the beach breaks at Foz do Lizandro and São Julião are forgiving, and the surf schools are in full swing. It is also the busiest and warmest time, so book accommodation early.
Winter, from November to March, is when the heavy reefs of the Reserve come alive, with powerful swells that can reach well overhead. This is advanced territory: pick your days, respect the locals, and never surf the bigger spots alone.
