Which Ericeira beach is right for you?

Seven quick questions, one clear answer. Match your swimming, your group and your plans to the right beach, with two backups and the surf spots nearby.

Ericeira has more than half a dozen beaches within a few kilometres, and they are not interchangeable. One is sheltered and safe for toddlers, another is a world-class surf reef where swimming is risky, a third is a long sunset bay you really need a car to reach. This one-minute quiz asks seven quick questions and matches you to the beach that fits how you swim, who you are travelling with and what you want from the day.

Common questions

Which Ericeira beach is safest for young children?

Praia dos Pescadores, the town beach, is the safest for young children. The harbour breakwater calms the water, it is a two-minute walk from the main square, and lifeguards patrol it in summer. Foz do Lizandro is a good second choice thanks to its shallow river lagoon.

Which beach can I reach in Ericeira without a car?

Praia dos Pescadores, Praia do Sul and São Sebastião are all within walking distance of the town centre. Pescadores and Praia do Sul are the easiest, just a few minutes on foot; São Sebastião is a short cliff path north. For Foz do Lizandro, Ribeira d'Ilhas or São Julião, a car or the summer beach bus helps.

Where is the best sunset in Ericeira?

The clifftop above Praia do Sul is the classic sunset spot in town, with benches and an open Atlantic horizon. For a wilder, emptier sunset, São Julião to the south has the longest golden beach, and Ribeira d'Ilhas is beautiful in the late-afternoon light from its café terrace.

Can you swim at Ribeira d'Ilhas?

Ribeira d'Ilhas is a surf beach first, with rocks and currents, so it is not a natural swimming beach. On a calm, low-tide day you can paddle in the sandy centre, but for a relaxed swim the sheltered town beaches are a far better choice. Always respect the lifeguard flags.

What is the best beginner surf beach in Ericeira?

Foz do Lizandro is the best beginner surf beach, a forgiving sandy beach break at a river mouth, lined with surf schools. São Julião, just south towards Sintra, is the other gentle option and catches more swell when the coast goes flat.
