A walkable town reef right by the skate park, an A-frame that works for mixed-ability groups and surf schools.
Matadouro sits within walking distance of the old town, opposite the skate park and the Boardriders store. A gap in the reef makes the paddle-out straightforward, and the A-frame peak offers a slower right and a trickier left.
On a small swell it is a friendly reef break with distinct peaks, ideal for building confidence. As a north-west to west swell fills in, the outside peak gets punchier and faster, while the inside keeps reforming for less experienced surfers. It is sensitive to tide: mid is the sweet spot, and low exposes more rock.
It is a favourite of surf schools because the inside reforms gently, while stronger surfers work the outside peak. Mind the rocks at low tide, and expect a food truck and a friendly scene on summer afternoons.
Being this close to town, it is often busy, with schools, locals and visitors sharing the peaks. The atmosphere is generally friendly and mixed, but on a good summer afternoon the water can get crowded, so pick your peak and be patient.
Everything the town offers is a few minutes away, cafés, board and wetsuit rental, and somewhere to rinse off. You can park on the streets nearby, though spaces go quickly in high season, which is exactly why walking down is part of its appeal.
The main hazards are the reef and rocks, most exposed at low tide, along with the usual urchins, so time your session around mid tide and watch your footing on the way in and out. With beginners and stronger surfers sharing the same water, keep your board under control and look before you go.
It works through much of the year whenever the right swell and an east wind line up, with summer bringing the schools and the busiest scene. If it is too small or too big, the open bay of Praia do Sul is right next door, and Ribeira d'Ilhas offers longer, cleaner walls when you want them. Surf it on a pushing mid tide for the best of it, and stay for the sunset, the town side of the reef catches the last light beautifully.
