A sandy cove backed by cliffs on the coast north of Ericeira, much quieter than the town beaches and glorious at sunset, though you will want a car.
North of Ericeira, past São Lourenço and out towards Ribamar and Santo Isidoro, Praia da Calada is a sandy cove tucked beneath tall cliffs. It is far enough from town that it stays quiet, a favourite escape for locals who want sand without the summer crowds.
The setting is open coast rather than town, a pocket of golden sand held between rocky headlands with the cliffs rising behind and the Atlantic filling the view. There are no whitewashed streets here, just the cove, the rock and the ocean, which is exactly why people make the trip.
The sand is soft and golden, and at low tide the cove opens out, while as the water rises it narrows against the rocks, so keep an eye on the tide. Swimming is possible on calm days, but this is open Atlantic with real swell and currents, better for a refreshing dip than long, lazy laps. Summer brings the warmest, gentlest water, while spring and autumn are cool, wild and often deserted.
Lifeguard cover is light and limited to the peak summer weeks, so read the flags when they fly, green for safe swimming, yellow to wade but not swim, and red to stay out of the water, with a chequered flag when no one is on duty. Outside high season nobody is watching, so take extra care and respect the conditions.
Facilities are seasonal and minimal, with a beach café and lifeguards only in the height of summer, so bring water, shade and anything you need for the day. It suits confident swimmers after a quiet dip, sunbathers who want space, and anyone happy to trade services for a calmer, wilder stretch of coast.
You will really want a car to get here, roughly 6 to 7 kilometres north of Ericeira along the coast road that also passes Ribeira d'Ilhas on the way. There is informal parking above the sand that fills on the best summer days. Come for a quiet afternoon and stay for the sunset, which is glorious here, with the sun dropping straight into the ocean off the cliffs.
