A long, wide golden bay on the road towards Sintra, space to roam, dependable surf and a restaurant with a view.
Just south of Ericeira on the way to Sintra, São Julião is a long sweep of golden sand that rarely feels crowded. It catches plenty of swell, so there is usually something to surf, and the size means walkers and swimmers find their own space too.
The bay is wide and open, straddling the boundary between the Ericeira and Sintra coasts, backed by dunes and green hills rather than town. That sense of space is its signature, a big sky and a long horizon, and it stays beautiful in almost any weather.
The sand runs for a long stretch, excellent for walking at low tide, and the sea shelves into a lively Atlantic beach break. Swimming is enjoyable on calmer days but the open exposure means waves and currents, so it rewards confident bathers more than small children. Summer brings the warmest, friendliest water, and spring and autumn are cool, wild and quiet.
Lifeguards cover the beach in the summer season and fly the Portuguese flags, green for safe swimming, yellow for wading only, red for no swimming, with a chequered flag when they are off duty. Given the beach break and rip currents, swim near the flags and check the conditions before you go in.
A restaurant on the headland above is a local favourite for lunch with a sea view, and in season you can usually count on showers and a surf school on the sand. It suits surfers, long-beach walkers, families who want room to spread out, and anyone chasing a big sunset away from the crowds.
A car makes it easiest to reach, and there is parking near the beach that fills on the best summer days. It is only a few minutes south of Ericeira, so it is an easy add-on to a day out towards Sintra. Come for the wide low-tide sand and stay for the sunset, and bring a windbreak, as the open bay can catch the afternoon breeze.
